I said yes, but this comes with the suggestion that you make it dual-boot with your current OS version, just in case.

I said fuck no, because it will go wrong.

don't buy any new parts, just wait till after the LAN. Buying new components is just asking to be "the guy that had to rebuild his PC at the LAN"

been there, done that ;) Just ask Stella

I did it last weekend ... but I'd never do less than two weeks before a LAN ... I put it on a fresh hard drive/SSD and currently have the option of swapping back if thing aren't stable, and this weekend I'll complete the transition.

When you say lossless, surely you don't mean the MADNESS of purely uncompressed AVI?

That codec isn't iffy in the slightest my good man. It is designed specifically for someone in your position, recording 'uncompressed' AVIs before making use of them in an editor. It's not used by a small number of people and Vegas has no problem reading the file format. Not sure about Premier, don't use it! I use that codec when outputting AVI vids using source's inbuilt AVI making commands and I've had no issues! Best way to find out - give it a go! You will cut your raw AVI sizes dramatically.

You're graphics card isn't supported on Windows 7?
What graphics card do you currently have?
For what reason do you need/want Windows 7?

I still run Windows XP x64. As I really don't care for DirectX10/11 hype, I've never needed to [-]up[/-]downgrade.

well i just hear that windows 7 is real good, and my comp is starting to increase load times now, so im wanting xp to actually use more than half the ram i put in it, and my graphics card is........... Mvidia Geforce 88000 GT, which.... actualyl says it does fit with windows 7......hmm, ok well im still thinking of upgrading either way.

I know i can run what ever, defreg, clean up a bit type thing, but my comp is taking a while to load up, and its crashing a few programs, even though its not half as bad as what some people may have, i notice it cause i built this comp, and when i first had it it ran buetifully.

Oh how things have changed :) but i think its time for a upgrade, and is what is diff with xp 64?

And i will deff look at that codec, looks good, and if it gets size down without killing detail, i will <3 you.

Oh and anybody at lan know how to overclock? i have tried but just ends with ALOT of programms crashing, which means to much overcloack i guess :) Well thanks guys, your all such a big help ^^

First up, I agree with CD, DO NOT ASK GOLEM FOR OVERCLOCKING ADVICE ;)

As for this, the major difference between XP and XP64 is that XP64 will recognize all your ram. More importantly, if you upgrade to windows 7 32bit, you will still hit the memory limit. the memory cap is a direct product of the 32 bit architecture, so any 32bit operating system is restricted to about 3.5gb of memory.

Don't bother with overclocking, you get such a slight % increase it's pointless. It's only worthwhile if you're going to water cool your gear to make the overclocking worthwhile. And then if you're willing to spend that much on water cooling, why not just buy a faster CPU/GPU?

Your 8800GT supports DirectX 10, and so you would only gain the ability to play games that support DirectX 10 , rendered with DirectX 10 eye candy, if you upgraded to Win7.
Anyway, it's arguable what performance increases you'll get from Windows7. I tried and tested Win7 (x64) vs WinXP x64 on my system and benchmarks showed no improvement. I'd rather throw my money at a new GPU.

If your OS is running sluggish, and apps are crashing, you may find a re-install of XP itself much advantage. Saves purchasing an OS which has a higher requirement.

You're wanting XP to use more than half the RAM you have? How much RAM do you have? And what CPU?
Not quite sure what you mean by that.

I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800, 4GB DDR2-800 (PC2-6400), nVidia GeForce 260GTX, all running on XP x64, and it runs very smoothly.

XP x64 is a 64-bit version of Windows XP (Windows Server 2003 x64 actually). So it can address more than 4GB RAM.

Bring your machine and I'm sure we can have a look and probably sort it out for you.

im not enitrly sure but Win xp only uses/ reconizes 2gb? or 3gb, and i have 4 in there, and if it could reconize more i would put some spare sticks in, i am using the Intal core 2 quad CPU, which is a bit old now, i think.

I do like eye candy, even thought its not needed. I prefer things just running smoother than looking better to be honest, i have had moments where bad comapny 2 lag out in a really cool explosion.

Thanks for advice on x64 versian, ill check my pc out and maybe consider getting that instead.

I have thought of the idea of reinstsalling os, but then i look at the endless gigs and gigs of installed programs, that i regulary use and just think ".....fuck....that......-_-" and dont do anything

I glad i asked u guys, you definatly know your stuff :)

oh and also, my headphone just broke, b-day coming up soon (25th, next week wednessday) and asking for new ones, i need surround sound (type) of headphones, i know you cant actually get surround sound headphones, but i do alot of fps gaming, so i need to hear things in the actual direction they are in, got any suggestions???

WinXP will never state that it sees 4GB due to the way it's memory reporting works. If you have PAE enabled (which it will by default), WinXP can address all 4GB, and could even address more, but Microsoft chose to limit it to 4GB due to driver compatibility (which is a good thing). Read up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_Extension to see how it works.

You're CPU isn't that old, It's newer than mine, and has double the cores! It supports x86_64 extensions, so upgrading to any 64-bit OS you may notice performance improvements, but only in software/games optimised for 64-bit. UT2k4 makes no performance difference on mine weather in 32 or 64 bit, but FarCry does. Though Epic aren't the best programmers.

That is a brand new game, with a heritage of releases been extremely buggy, and you could do with a faster GPU for such game.

Yea your next OS should be x64. Upgrading to another 32bit x86 OS these days is pointless for gamers.

I know exactly what you mean, But seriously do you use those 'Gigs' every single day? I doubt it. I recently reinstalled, and rather than reinstall everything I use, I just install what I need when I need it. It's keeps my system clobber free for longer. I still haven't got round to installing Office cause I haven't needed to use it yet.

Welcome, many heads have probably been through the same issues your having.

Surround sound headphones are available, though they're not as true as a surround sound cinema speaker arrangement, they're the next best thing at a LAN. I know Golem has some Speedlink Medusa 5.1. I've tried them and I would recommend them, infact I think I'll be purchasing before the LAN myself. Emokid also has a pair too, and he rates them. They're around £55 last time I saw. An alternative are the pair made by Roccat. The Roccat Kave: http://www.roccat.org/Products/Gaming-S ... CCAT-Kave/ . Though I'm sure they're more expensive, a mate has these and they are good I must admit.
